ʻApapane is one of the most common Hawaiian honeycreepers on Hawaiʻi Island, and occur on 6 of the 8 main Hawaiian Islands. They are quite curious, often checking out humans who are in the forest and vocalizing often. Their nesting season coincides with nectar production of their main food source- ʻōhiʻa lehua flowers which makes them integral pollinators to Hawaiʻiʻs most critical forest tree. The best way to distinguish between ʻapapane and ʻiʻiwi is that ʻapapane have "white underpants" on and a short black bill versus ʻiʻiwi with a curved orange bill. My favorite thing about ʻapapane is that you can hear their wing beats as they fly and it is magical!!
