ʻAukuʻu

These charismatic wetland birds, also known as Black Crowned Night Herons, are one of my favorites! The adults sport these pretty blue capes with bright red eyes, whereas the juveniles have yellow eyes with brown and white plumage. They are known to stalk their fish prey with a variety of interesting postures from neck straining to shoulder scrunching. With the decrease in abundant wetland habitat in Hawaiʻi, these have been known to grab fish from koi ponds and water features!
