Ulu

Before Kū became a god, it is said that during a famine he sacrificed himself for his wife and family and disappeared into the ground. An ʻulu tree sprouted from the same spot after being watered by his wifeʻs tears, thus saving his family and the rest of the village from starvation. Historically, the ‘ulu belt through Kona used to provide food for thousands of people on Hawai’i Island. The versatile breadfruit has sustained communities for generations and remains an iconic tree across Hawai’i pae ‘āina.
