‘Alalā
‘Alalā
Hawaiian crows are extinct in the wild- but there are so many dedicated conservation warriors working to bring them back from the brink! I was lucky enough to see some at the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center recently and was in awe. These manu have 24 different types of vocalizations that range from human like sounds to growls! They are loud, intelligent birds that were critical native plant seed dispersers. Their large beaks are perfect for prying open large fruits and seeds. Soon many of the individuals will be released in Maui where there is no threat of predation from ‘Io, the Hawaiian hawk. I hope we all get to see ‘alalā back in the wild in our lifetime.
