Boxfish

My favorite Hawaiian i’a has always been the spotted boxfish. These colorful and fast swimmers are actually encased in a rigid armored plate, only being able to move their fins, eyes and mouth. Only the males are brightly colored, and tend to a harem of brown spotted females in their territory. Like many other reef fish, females have the ability to change into males if needed-which is badass! Box fish are generally known as Pahu in ‘ōlelo Hawai’i but this particular species is known as Moa.
