‘I’iwi on ‘Ōhi’a

Did you know that ‘i’iwi have a hollow tongue to better sip nectar? Their curved bill is specially adapted to fit perfectly into our native lobeliad flowers. However, decline in these species has made our native ‘ōhi’a trees their primary food source. These bright manu are now only found above 4000 ft on Hawai’i, Maui and Kaua’i island. Have you ever heard their squeaky screen door sounding call? I always hear ‘i’iwi way before I see them!
