Kīkāpu (Tinker’s Butterflyfish)

This colorful butterflyfish in found all the way in the twilight zone, at depths of 150ft or more which is unusual for most butterfly fish species. These high contrast colors may be used to distinguish mates in the low light conditions. Once thought to be found only in Hawai’i, they have since been seen in the Marshall Islands. These beauties are highly sought after in the aquarium industry, but we like them best in the ocean!
