Meet the Kioea aka Bristle-Thighed Curlew? These large billed beauties make the long journey from Alaska each year to Hawai’i for the winter, with most hanging out in Papahānaumokeākea Marine National Monument, and some wintering in O’ahu and Hawai’i Island. They have been documented using tools to forage, apparently hurling rocks at Albatross eggs to break them open! 🤯 During their winter molt in Hawai’i, Kioea lose the ability to fly and are quite vulnerable to predators, so give ‘em space!
