Pua ka Wiliwili

There's nothing quite like seeing a wiliwili tree in full bloom! An ʻōlelo noʻeau says "Pua ka wiliwili nanahu ka manō." It was said that when the wiliwili trees were blooming, the sharks were biting, coinciding with tiger shark pupping season. These gorgeous endemic trees are unlike any other in Hawaiʻi with their twisted gnarled bark and inspiring resilient qualities. These nectar rich flowers were some of the only food sources for native birds during the end of hot dry summers on the leeward sides of the islands.
