Large Uhu (Regal Parrotfish)

Did you know that female uhu can change into colorful super males like this one here when there is a need for one in the reef? How cool is that?! There are 7 different varieties of parrotfish in Hawai’i and some of them sleep in a mucus bag of their own creation for protection at night. It’s so weird to think that 70% of the sand on our beaches is parrotfish poop! A large adult uhu can excrete over a ton of sand a year. What a weird and wonderful world we live in!
